The CSI MasterFormat system organizes construction work into numbered divisions and sections. Using it consistently in takeoffs, estimates, and submittals keeps everyone on the same page.
What Are CSI Divisions?
MasterFormat groups work by type: e.g., Div 03 Concrete, Div 04 Masonry, Div 07 Thermal and Moisture Protection, Div 08 Openings. Each division breaks down into sections (e.g., 03 30 00 Cast-in-Place Concrete). Drawings and specs are often organized the same way, so aligning your takeoffs and estimates to divisions makes it easier to match quantities to spec sections and subcontracts.
Why It Matters for Takeoffs
When you do quantity takeoff, organizing by division means your output matches how subs and suppliers think about scope. A masonry sub expects quantities under Div 04; a roofing sub under Div 07. Division-level takeoffs also make it easier to hand off to estimators and to track what’s been covered.
Common Divisions in Our Work
Zeconic’s quantity takeoff coverage routinely includes divisions such as 02 (Existing Conditions), 03 (Concrete), 04 (Masonry), 05 (Metals), 06 (Wood/Plastics), 07 (Thermal and Moisture), 08 (Openings), 09 (Finishes), 10 (Specialties), 12 (Furnishings), 15 (Reserved), and 16 (Electrical). Aligning to these divisions supports clear, consistent deliverables for your bid or procurement package.
